The tension between getting people off of the corporate web, and the fact that a lot of people can't afford the time and money to host their own online presence.

@interesting I have so many thoughts about this. Digital sovereignty should not belong only to those rich enough (in time, money, and knowledge) to host their own websites and domain names. True online equality requires free/cheap web services with easy data migration or nomadic identity. The Fediverse and IndieWeb are nearly there (as apps roll out LOLA data migration) but will also need easier on-ramps for non-technical people.
@interesting I recognize many people’s legitimate reasons to have small, quiet spaces on the Fediverse (and IndieWeb). We should make better tools for each person to curate the parts of the network where they want to participate. But finding something beautiful, then shutting the door behind you? That kind of digital elitism infuriates me, and has no place here.
This is why having "flagship" instances, open for sign ups by the general public, is important, for any platform in the Fediverse to be viable - even if that means that a good amount of the user base ends up more centralized to a few main instances.
