In 1882, Los Angeles had two major newspapers. By 1886, Harry Chandler had bought out all the independent distributors...and stopped reliably delivering anything but the LA Times. Soon enough, people were canceling their "unreliable" subscriptions to other papers, and that's how LA became a one-major-newspaper town.
